Each lesson includes three readings, vocabulary, short dialogs, speaking frames, quiz questions, and an answer key for classroom use.
During English class, the desks start to shake. Some students shout, but Ms. Lin says, 'Drop, cover, and hold on.' Everyone gets under the desks and covers their heads.
The shaking stops after a short time. Ms. Lin tells students to stay calm and wait. They do not run to the door because many people could fall or get hurt.
After the drill, Ms. Lin explains that practice helps people act quickly. The class learns that knowing what to do can make an emergency less scary.
At home, Jay and his father make an emergency kit. They put water, simple food, a flashlight, batteries, medicine, a radio, and copies of important phone numbers into a bag.
Jay asks, 'Do we really need all these things?' His father says, 'Maybe we will not use them, but it is better to be ready.' They put the bag near the door.
They also make a family contact plan. If phones do not work well, they will meet at Jay's uncle's house. Jay writes the plan in his notebook.
One afternoon, a small earthquake happens after school. Jay is walking home with his sister. They stop away from walls and glass windows. Jay waits until the shaking stops.
Jay's sister feels nervous. Jay says, 'We practiced this. Let's walk home slowly and call Dad when we can.' They do not use the elevator in their building.
At home, Dad checks the emergency kit. Nothing is broken. Jay feels proud because his family has a plan and knows how to stay calm.
