Lesson Overview

This free GEPT elementary handout helps students talk about a current topic: using AI for homework.

Students read three short A2-level passages, learn useful words, practice three daily-life dialogs, and discuss responsible AI use.

The lesson is original classroom material informed by GEPT elementary skill descriptions and recent public discussion about AI literacy in schools.

Reading 1 | Mina's AI Homework

Mina is a junior high school student. This year, many students in her class talk about AI. Some students use a chatbot to ask questions. Some students use it to check English sentences. Mina thinks AI is interesting, but she is not sure how to use it in the right way.

One afternoon, Mina has English homework. She must read a short story and write five sentences about it. She opens an AI chatbot and types, 'Please write my homework.' The chatbot gives her five good sentences very quickly. Mina looks at the screen. The answer is easy, but she feels worried. 'If I just copy this, it is not my work,' she thinks.

The next day, Mina asks her teacher, Mr. Chen, for help. Mr. Chen says, 'AI can be a study tool, but it should not do all your homework. You can ask it to explain a word, give you an example, or check one sentence. But the ideas must be yours.'

After school, Mina tries again. First, she reads the story by herself. Next, she writes five simple sentences. Then she asks the chatbot, 'Can you check my grammar?' The chatbot gives her some advice. Mina fixes two mistakes and learns a new word. This time, she feels happy because she understands her homework better.

Reading 2 | AI in Schools

AI is becoming common in many schools. Some teachers use digital tools to help students practice English, math, or science. In Taiwan, the government has also talked about using AI in education. The goal is not only to use new technology, but also to help students learn safely and responsibly.

AI can be helpful in class. It can give students more examples. It can explain a difficult idea in simple words. It can also help teachers see which students may need more practice. However, AI is not perfect. Sometimes it gives wrong answers. Sometimes students may use it too much and stop thinking by themselves.

Because of this, many teachers want students to learn three important rules. First, check the answer. Second, do not copy. Third, tell the teacher when you use AI for help.

Reading 3 | Class Rules for AI

On Friday, Mr. Chen gives the class a small group activity. Each group must make three rules for using AI at school. The students talk about homework, tests, and reports. Some students think AI saves time. Other students worry that classmates may copy answers and learn less.

Mina's group writes three rules on a poster. Rule one: use AI to ask questions, not to copy full answers. Rule two: check important information in a book or on a trusted website. Rule three: write a short note when you use AI, such as, 'I used AI to check my spelling.'

After the activity, Mr. Chen says, 'Technology changes quickly, but good learning still needs time, practice, and real thinking.' Mina likes this idea. She thinks AI can help her study, but her own effort is still the most important part.
