Lesson Overview

This free GEPT Elementary handout helps students practice A2 reading and speaking through the topic: Pet Care Responsibility: Loving Animals the Right Way.

Each lesson includes three readings, vocabulary, short dialogs, speaking frames, quiz questions, and an answer key for classroom use.

Reading 1 | A New Dog

Ray's family adopts a dog named Lucky. Ray is happy because he always wanted a pet. On the first day, he plays with Lucky for two hours, but he forgets to fill the water bowl.

His mother says, 'Loving a pet is not only playing. You must feed it, give it clean water, and help keep it healthy.' Ray feels sorry and makes a pet care chart.

Every morning, Ray checks Lucky's water. After school, he walks Lucky with a leash. At night, he washes his hands after playing with Lucky. Ray learns that pets need love and responsibility.

Reading 2 | Staying Healthy Around Pets

Pets can make people happy and active. Dogs can be good friends and help families spend time outside. However, animals can sometimes carry germs even when they look clean.

People should wash their hands after touching pets, pet food, toys, bowls, or waste. Children should also ask before touching another person's dog.

A responsible owner takes pets to a veterinarian, uses a leash in public, and cleans up after the pet. These habits help protect the pet, the owner, and other people.

Reading 3 | At the Park

Ray takes Lucky to the park. A small child runs toward Lucky and wants to touch him. Ray says politely, 'Please wait. Let Lucky smell your hand first.'

The child's father thanks Ray. Ray keeps Lucky on the leash and watches carefully. Lucky is friendly, but Ray knows every dog can feel scared or nervous.

After the walk, Ray picks up Lucky's waste and washes his hands at home. His mother says, 'You are becoming a good pet owner.' Ray smiles because he knows Lucky depends on him.
