Lesson Overview

This free GEPT Elementary speaking handout helps students practice useful clinic English: describing symptoms, asking for help, making appointments, and explaining absence.

Students learn A2 words, read three short situations, practice six model dialogs, and use sentence frames for pair role-play.

The material is original classroom content informed by official health information. It is for English learning, not medical advice.

Situation 1 | Feeling Sick at School

Lily is in English class, but she does not feel well. Her head hurts, and her throat is sore. She also feels cold, so she puts on her jacket. Her teacher, Ms. Wang, sees that Lily looks tired.

Ms. Wang asks, 'Are you OK?' Lily says, 'I have a headache and a sore throat.' Ms. Wang tells Lily to visit the school nurse. Lily walks slowly to the health room and explains her symptoms again.

The nurse checks Lily's temperature. It is a little high. The nurse asks Lily to drink water and rest for a few minutes. Then the nurse calls Lily's mother. Lily goes home early and rests. The next day, she tells her teacher, 'I was absent because I was sick.'

Situation 2 | Making a Clinic Appointment

Ben wakes up with a cough and a runny nose. His mother says, 'Let's call the clinic.' Ben feels nervous because he does not know what to say in English. His mother helps him practice before the call.

On the phone, Ben says, 'Hello, I would like to make an appointment.' The clinic worker asks, 'What symptoms do you have?' Ben answers, 'I have a cough and a sore throat. It started yesterday.' The worker gives him an appointment at three o'clock.

At the clinic, the doctor asks Ben more questions: 'Do you have a fever? When did it start? Are you allergic to any medicine?' Ben answers slowly but clearly. He learns that giving clear information can help the doctor understand his problem.

Situation 3 | Calling in Sick

On Friday morning, Emma has a fever. Her father calls the school office and says Emma cannot go to school. Emma feels sad because her class has a speaking activity that day, but she knows she needs to rest.

Emma sends a short message to her classmate, Nina. She writes, 'I am sick today. Can you tell me the homework?' Nina replies, 'Sure. We need to finish page 28 and practice the dialog.' Emma thanks Nina and says she will practice when she feels better.

Before lunch, Emma washes her hands and drinks water. She stays at home so she will not make other students sick. On Monday, she goes back to school and tells Ms. Wang, 'I am better now. May I make up the speaking activity?'

Teacher Notes

Use the warm-up questions before the vocabulary table, then ask students to repeat each symptom with 'I have...' or 'My ... hurts.'

For stronger students, ask them to add time phrases such as this morning, yesterday, after lunch, and for two days.

For classroom safety, remind students that this is language practice and they should ask adults or health professionals for real health problems.
