Lesson Overview

This free IELTS speaking handout helps students practice routines, productivity, healthy habits, time management, and work-life balance.

The lesson includes Part 1 interview questions, Part 2 cue cards, Part 3 discussion questions, model dialogs, useful vocabulary, quiz questions, and an answer key.

The material is original classroom content informed by official IELTS Speaking format and assessment information.

IELTS Speaking Format

The IELTS Speaking test lasts about 11-14 minutes and has three parts.

Part 1 asks short questions about familiar topics. Part 2 gives candidates a task card and one minute to prepare. Part 3 asks deeper questions connected to the Part 2 topic.

Candidates are assessed on fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

Part 1 | Daily Routine and Productivity

In Part 1, students should answer directly and then add a reason or example.

Useful answer pattern: direct answer + reason + example.

Example: I am most productive in the morning because my mind feels fresh. For example, I usually study vocabulary before lunch.

Part 2 | Cue Card Practice

Cue Card 1 asks students to describe a time when they were very productive.

Cue Card 2 asks students to describe a healthy habit they want to keep.

Cue Card 3 asks students to describe a person who manages time well.

Each cue card includes prompts, note space, and a model answer students can adapt.

Part 3 | Work-Life Balance Discussion

Part 3 questions ask students to discuss modern life, technology, time pressure, procrastination, burnout, and work-life balance.

Useful frames include: In my opinion, ____ because ____. Compared with the past, people today ____. On the one hand, ____. On the other hand, ____.

Teachers can ask students to give two-sided answers and include real examples.

Teacher Notes

Use the Part 1 dialogs first, then ask students to replace the details with their own routine.

For Part 2, give students one minute for notes and ask them to speak for 90 seconds.

For Part 3, encourage students to explain causes, compare past and present, and speculate about the future.

Source Notes

This handout is original classroom material based on official IELTS Speaking format and marking information.

Official IELTS sources describe the three-part speaking test, 11-14 minute timing, Part 2 preparation time, and four assessment criteria.

British Council practice materials also describe the Part 2 task card format and 1-2 minute long turn.

Candidate: I am usually most productive in the morning, especially after breakfast.
Examiner: How do you usually relax after a busy day?
Candidate: I usually take a short walk or watch a light video.
Examiner: Why do many people feel they do not have enough time?
Candidate: I think modern life is full of small distractions, especially phones and social media.
